Harbor

This is suitable for the navigation of large ships. Nature was kind in giving to Manitowoc a natural bay and harbor which improved by the hand of man gives her today one of the finest harbors on the lake. This is not a matter of fact but suggested by home pride in stubborn truism born out by navigators all over the  lake. Vast sums of money have been spent from time to time in making improvements in the harbor. It is now navigable for the largest vessels for two miles upward from the harbor piers. It has a channel 16 feet in depth and a width varying from 237 feet at the mouth to 417 feet near 10th street, thus permitting of the handling of large vessels. It is protected by natural bay formed by Two Rivers Point which is to the northeast and projects six miles into the lake on the south. South Point extends 3 miles into the lake. It is thus protected from the winds on 3 sides and only effected by a northeaster, and the government recently completed a breakwater so that protection is offered on all sides. It is intended to increase the depth of the channel to 20 feet and the city council and other sources will make this improvement. In fact, the council has now given the contract for the work.
