Edwards had first proposed going to Chicago as his cousin there named Cook after whom Coo County was named told glowing stories of the west.From Buffalo he took steamer "Robert Fulton" to Detroit and then worked passage on schooner hauling supplies to Green Bay fort. Schooner went on to Conroe's mill in Manitowoc with Edwards. Rapids mill needed scows built to take lumber to the mouth of the river for shipment. Edwards took contract to build two scows and decided to stay in area. Built a fishing boat in 1836 and began partnership with J P Clark of Detroit. A shanty was built between Two Rivers and Manitowoc where a schooner went monthly leaving with cargoes of over 100 bbls. In 1841 he had a hotel on the Green Bay road a short distance from present site of Cooperstown. His son Henry was born Long Beach New Jersey, died Charlevoix MI 03/18/1898 at age 72. Captain Edwards was chairman first railroad citizens meeting 1851, county board member 1840 and coroner 1849-1850.
