Born in Chemnitz, Germany 07/06/1811 of high parentage. University of Dresden 1832, Came to United States 1833, Detroit 1833-41, Manitowoc 1841-74, first German Settler. At Neshoto in lumbering business. 1841-48 without white neighbors. Indian chief's children played with his. Lived Two Rivers 1848-51. In Rapids 1851 06 in trade. Editor Tribune Manitowoc 1863-74. Two of his children drowned in river 1847. Lutheran and later founded of Presbyterian Church at Rapids. Consul to Leghorn Italy 1874-1877 where he died. Buried 09/1877. Bought back famous paintings, one of which is now in Presbyterian Church. Clerk Court 1853. Sold his mill at Shoto to R Taylor & Pendleton 1848. On railroad committee 1853 and again 1869. A whig leader later a Republican Mason. Wife Born Chemnitz Germany 06/11/1809. Died 08/17/1900. Borcherdt, A Brother Settled Mishicot 40s. (See Pilot 04/07/'92.)
