born in Franklin County Maine 1-11-1832; when he was 8 years he lost his father who died in 1840 and when he was 9 years he started for himself; at the age of 18 years he ran an engine on the Medford & Taunton road and then went to Stillwater, MN. and then in the woods lumbering; he followed that life till 1863 when he went east again and took an engine on a coal railroad; on leaving this situation he went home to Maine on a visit; he came to Oshkosh WI in 1867 where he worked in the lumber business and to Chilton in 1875 entering into partnership with D L Libby in the saw mill sawing hard wood at the rate of 8,000 feet a day; in 1872 he married Miss Reed of Maine; they have 3 boys Roy R., Eugene and Lynn; Mr Smith was an alderman in Chilton in 1878 bur resigned not taking any part in local politics; they attend the Methodist Episcopal Church
